6/9/2023 0 Comments Bunny by mona![]() “Perhaps then we could draw from film, winkingly indulge in some campy nostalgia,” offers Bunny. Plus some rituals where the Bunnies conjure men from rabbits, according to their idea of a ‘dream man’ – That was their own private Bunny thing, like Touching Tuesdays or binge-watching The Bachelorette or making little woodland creatures out of marzipan.īut the Bunnies do invite Samantha to their soirée and, ignoring her best friend Ava’s scorn, Samantha enters their strange world, filled with pastel coloured frocks, mini foods, group hugs and mutual adoration. ![]() No way in hell they would ever invite me to Smut Salon. The narrator, Samantha, who privately refers to the Bunnies as the ‘Cuntscapades’, hates their preening, their simpering language, the ‘… A-line hems of their cupcake dresses…’ and the ornate braids in their ‘…Game of Thrones hair.’ Yet despite her outward disdain for the Bunnies, Samantha is morbidly curious about these women whose post-grad experience appears to be far more productive than her own – It begins with a party, or rather a ‘Demitasse’ because ‘… this school is too Ivy and New England to call a party a party.’ They attend Warren, a small New England college. In a clear homage to Heathers, Awad has created a story about a clique of post-grad narrative arts students, known as the Bunnies. But be warned, it’s a bizarre book – campus-lit meets magic realism meets what-the-hell-was-that meets Weird Science… ![]() ![]() Then you probably ought to read Bunny by Mona Awad. ![]() 6/9/2023 0 Comments The hill we climb full poem![]() Not because we will never again know defeat, but because we will never again sow division. ![]() That we’ll forever be tied together victorious. There is plenty of political intrigue, scheming, and manipulating to keep the plot moving. I learned a lot more about Zenn and Thane Myers and I think they are two of the most interesting characters that I’ve met in Johnson’s world.Surrender unveils the complexity of the world that Johnson has created and I really enjoyed learning more about it. Everything is so much more intricate and entangled then we ever would have thought from reading Possession. I am not attached to any of the characters in the story and I don’t relate to any of them, but I just love the plot! Since Gunner & Raine are both “Insiders” and are involved in the world of the oppressive government, we learn much more about the world Elana Johnson has created. Surrender is told from the perspective of a male & a female, just like Possession, but this time we are introduced to two completely new characters-Gunner & Raine. Once I was able to move past my initial disappointment, I remembered why I liked Elana Johnson’s writing so much and I am truly looking forward to reading the next installment in this series. At first, I had time getting into Surrender because I was expecting the story to be told from the perspectives of Jag and Vi, as it was in Posession. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Kova was still speaking but I only caught the tail end of a few words. I'm sure Bronze Age or post-Classical specialists will grind their teeth slightly by this privileging of the Classical, but, as someone who favours the late Roman Empire, that is common when one has to deal with a 'Golden Age'. Those are important, of course, but I do get impatient with the amount of it at times. That makes sense because the sheer amount of pieces increases vastly in the fifth century, but one can notice a change in the style which shifts away from trends to highly descriptive passages. It gives an excellent overview of Greek material culture from the Bronze Age to the Hellenistic Age.Īs one might expect because of the volume of finds, a lot of attention is given to Classical pieces as opposed to those periods before and after. The sometimes very technical discussions are relieved by the glossary (if I chose to consult it, which I usually didn't bother- laziness, not erudition, being the reason). It provides an excellent introduction to the topic of Greek material culture which is, of course, its job. Unfortunately, this edition is currently out of stock. His officer Iago tricks him into believing that his wife Desdemona is having an affair with his Lieutenant, Michael Cassio. After their time in Venice, Othello is appointed general in the Venetian Army. Modern notable performers of the role include Paul Robeson, Orson Welles, Richard Burton, James Earl Jones, Laurence Fishburne, Laurence Olivier, and Avery Brooks. Othello was first mentioned in a Revels account of 1604 when the play was performed on 1 November at Whitehall Palace with Richard Burbage almost certainly Othello's first interpreter. Othello murders her and, upon discovering Iago's deceit, kills himself. After being deployed to Cyprus, Othello is manipulated by his Ancient (pronounced Ensign) Iago into believing Desdemona is an adulteress. He elopes with Desdemona, the beautiful daughter of a respected Venetian senator. Othello is a brave and competent soldier of advanced years and Moorish background in the service of the Venetian Republic. There, he is simply referred to as the Moor.
